Bamboo House

Here’s an interesting house we found along the ways of Taiohae.

Like the social structure of the island it represents the melding of the old and new. Traditional bamboo latticework is combined with concrete foundations etc. At the local agriculture fair we had the opportunity to learn how the bamboo wall panels are made. They are built as 4’x8’ sheets to be used with standard building plans. The bamboo is halved lengthwise, pounded flat and then woven in a specific pattern. Once completed the corners are secured with a wire to keep the panel from falling apart.
